Apple is reportedly in the talks to conceive its own MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) in the United States and Europe. Sources claim that the company is currently testing the service right now stateside, with plans to soon begin testing overseas.

Is this comes to fruition, Apple would essentially become a new carrier, allowing iPhone (and perhaps iPad) customers to cut ties with their current carrier. Cellular coverage would in turn be leased out to Apple, accessible to anybody using the rumored service.

This is because future devices would assumably be equipped with the Apple SIM, which has been included in all current generation Wi-FI + Cellular iPad models since the launch of the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 late last year. A tool like this allows customers to easily switch which carrier’s towers they want to use on the fly, in the case of requiring better coverage or opting for a cheaper plan.
